Membership

There are approximately 1000 association members. MAFS was formed to provide a forensic science organization for the Midwest region, including the states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio and Wisconsin. This regional structure has not limited the growth of MAFS, however. There are currently members in 35 states, the District of Columbia, and Canada.

The membership is composed of forensic analysts, administrators, forensic science educators and private consultants. Experience levels of MAFS members range from entry level to more than 50 years of experience.

 The Benefits of MAFS

  • MAFS membership offers the opportunity to draw upon the experience and knowledge of forensic professionals in the largest regional forensic science association in the United States.
  • A quarterly Newsletter which is the primary vehicle for communication and exchange of information during the year. The Newsletter provides timely information about the organization and its members, upcoming meetings, seminar and workshop announcements, and employment opportunities.
  • Programs include both a yearly fall conference and specialized workshops throughout the year. Papers and workshops span the forensic spectrum, including DNA technology, drug chemistry, serology, arson and other trace evidence, blood spatter interpretation, toxicology, latent prints, photography, and document analysis as well as courtroom training, laboratory management, quality assurance, and safety.
  • Funding grants for research and a Professional Development Fund are two financial mechanisms available to encourage research projects and/or paper presentations at annual meetings.
  • Personal growth opportunities through leadership as an officer, committee member, section coordinator, workshop coordinator, or as program and local arrangement chairperson for an annual meeting.
